Osteoporosis is the loss of calcium and other minerals from bones, making them weak and more likely to fracture. In Australia, around half of all women and one third of men over the age of 60 are affected. Women are at greater risk due to hormonal changes during menopause, which accelerate bone loss. Regular exercise can slow the rate of bone loss and, in some cases, improve bone strength.
Since most fractures occur as a result of falls, exercise plays a key role by improving muscle strength and balance, thereby reducing the risk of falling. Exercise also offers additional health benefits, including better management of other medical conditions and reduced reliance on medications that may increase fall risk.
